Swiss ski camp update No 3

Applications.

The close of date was the 15/10, however I know that there are few more due, so if these can be sent in now, it would be helpful.

Travel.

We have a new travel option for this year.

Arranged through “United Travel” Wanaka.

They have arranged a deal with EMIRATES airline.

Any points on their network. Normal baggage allowance (30kg) plus an additional 30kg for free.

This is for anyone connected with the camp, all family members and friends, travelling to or from Europe

Anyone wanting to book or for more information about this deal/airline, contact Fiona on (03) 443 7414 for more information.

Insurance.

At present the only option is thru SRNZ. It’s a little more expensive than last year, however you must have something in place. Let me know if you find any other options.

Twitter.

You can now follow tweets from us on ‘worldskiconnection’ Get the latest information. Sign up now on Twitter.com

Currency.

The dollar is much better than at the same time last year. Currently sitting at around 0.76chf. This compares to a low of 0.57chf in Jan this year, and highs of 0.92 in Feb. 08.

I would suggest that after reading the comments below, between current levels or better, is very good and is probley as good as it will get in the short term.

The following comment may be helpful information;

Meanwhile, BNZ chief economist Tony Alexander is predicting the Kiwi will eventually return to pre-recession highs of US82c unless "something truly unexpected happens".

However, this will probably not occur within the year.

Jones said BNZ was expecting the currency to sit at US75c at this time next year. This was assuming the global economy and local economies continued to recover.

"That being said, the sheer speed of recent gains leads us to believe probably a near-term correction is in order for the New Zealand dollar in the next few weeks," he said.

This was based on the view that global equity markets had improved very rapidly since March and a correction there would lead to a correction in currencies as well.

This short-term drop could see the dollar dip back down towards US70c, Jones added.

Swiss ski camp update No 2

With the last day of skiing now past, its time to think about the northern winter.

The following items are important points to note regarding this years camps.

Fees.

The most important info you have all been looking for, is attached.

Applications.

It’s very helpful for us and our planning, if all interested racers submit an application form. (This is also attached.)

Filling out the application is not committing to the camp, but rather allows us to get an indication of numbers and plan according for staff, transport, accommodation etc.

If you could send in your applications ASAP it would be appreciated.

Even if you have already communicated your interest and intentions, we still need the application form at some point. NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME.

Based on this information I can supply a quote and when all details are confirmed, arrange the deposit payment.

Enrolments must be in by 15/10.

Commitment and deposits, by 1/11.

Full payment, no later than 1/12.

We will base our uniform order, Hotel accommodation and race entries, on all the applications I have (in writing) by the 15/10.

After this date, its Pot Luck!!!

Camp Dates.

With both the Junior and FIS camps, you may attend the camp at any time and for any duration. However based on current information the following dates seem to be popular;

Junior camp - Arriving around 12-15 DEC or between Xmas and New Year and staying until early Feb, or to after the Topolino races in later Feb (26-27/02).

FIS Camp - Arriving early DEC, after Xmas, or start of Jan. Staying anytime until early April.

If any person would require an earlier start date, this is possible in both camps, but you would need to let me know ASAP.

Travel.

Experience over the last few years has shown that it is easier for all, if we have common airfares and routes when travelling to Europe.

We found that last season many wanted to change travel times and routes and it became impossible to easily coordinate this when everyone was on different tickets etc.

If you are in a situation where you need extra weight, need to travel with others, or want to use a specific airline, its helpful if you keep me advised of your travel plans.

Our suggestion this year will be;

Ex NZ (or Aussie, via Auckland) – London (Air NZ).

London – Zurich (SWISS)

This is different to last year, but gives us much better flexibility with flights and ticket changes.

This can all be coordinated through Air NZ, by calling;

“Cyrus Berry”. 0800 247737 (from NZ only) or +64 3 3534834.

Please inform him you are on the camp with World Ski Connection, in order to get extra baggage allowance etc.

If changes to flights are then needed, while on the camp, we can coordinate this directly and in most cases without any extra costs.

International Junior Races.

Nominations and Intentions must be with your coaches and passed to SRNZ no later than tomorrow (15/10) , for consideration for selection.

If I don’t know you are coming, get your applications in today.

Parents, Families and Visitors.

While the above group are not catered for in the camp, we welcome visitors to Frutigen at any time.

We try to involve you all in activities and trips and even have special “Parents ski days” when the opportunity allows.

For all who are looking for accommodation, check out the following;

www.frutigen-tourismus.ch/en/reservations.cfm

Everyone in Frutigen uses this web site to promote their rental apartments, very little is found on other web sites.

So you should look here and see what you can find. The only problem is – on the web site there is no addresses. So you have to make contact first with each owner. This can be a bit hard as many locals don’t speak English. (By Email is normally better.)

Once you have a list of options, I can help with which areas would be good.

Or better still, call the Tourist Office in Frutigen, and explain what you need, and let them find something for you. It’s a free service.

Juniors will be staying in hotel Simplon, so try to get something close to that area.

Cars.

We can arrange rental cars thru the local garage. They are normally slightly older models but the cost is very good. Last season was a 1000chf/month, all up cost.

Just contact me if you need to make a booking.

Feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions regarding any aspect of the camps.

More updates will be sent out as information comes to hand.

Currency.

The dollar is much better than at the same time last year. Currently sitting at around 0.76chf. This compares to a low of 0.57chf in Jan this year, and highs of 0.92 in Feb. 08.

That’s all the news for now.

02/10 2009:

Welcome to the first news update for our 2009/2010 Swiss based ski race training camps.

Once again our Swiss ski racing camps will run from our base in Frutigen.

Although we had looked at the possibility of other training centres for this season, Frutigen still offers the best location and cost structure for the camps this year.

Over recent years the format of the camps has worked well and so we will continue in the same way this year, hosting both Junior and a Senior (FIS) camps.

(For information on previous years please check out the news page on our website at www.worldskiconnection.com )

The camps will run from early Dec for all age groups, through to the end of March. (Training is available before and after these times by special arrangement.)

For all our racers this year we will the Simplon Hotel. For the seniors we have options with studio apartments where the seniors can have access to their own cooking facilities, if desired.

With the winter season in NZ almost over, it’s once again great to see our athletes doing so well. With many great results over the NZ season it’s very encouraging to see all our team members improving rankings and being seen on the podium.

This year will see a number of our regular athletes retiring or moving on. Every ski race career has to end at some point. For those not returning, we thank you all for the time that you have all trained with World Ski Connection (and many also in Wanaka) and wish you all well for your future.

But it’s also great to see so many new juniors showing interest, along with our established racers returning. Our junior camp looks like it will be the strongest it has ever been.

I’m pleased to be able to announce that for this year, we are welcoming members from Queenstown Alpine Ski Team, along with their coach “Grant Stockman” who are joining with us in Frutigen.

This extra dynamic for our camp will be an exciting step forward for all involved.

Although our camps are focused around providing for the athletes, we also welcome parents to come and stay in Frutigen and enjoy the camp/skiing/Swiss experience with us.

For that reason we offer the athletes either a full “live in” option, or the option to stay with their family, and join the camp activities during the day.

(Due to limited space, it’s not practical for parents to be able to stay in the hotel with the athletes.)

We are able to help to find apartments and houses for parents along with rental cars.

Transport for all athletes each day to the mountain is provided, but not for parents. It’s necessary to drive about 20min, so a car would be required for those who are not in the training programs.
